Alyssa's tidepool fieldtrip to Shell Beach

What a day! Lowest tide of the year brought three third grade classes to Shell Beach for hands-on analysis. Mr. Matula even let them build volcanoes- stuff newspaper inside and light it on fire, blowing smoke out the top! Of course, my boys in the class added seaweed, kelp, and more technical named things that they knew to find. Smarter than a fifth grader? Not even a third grader! My friend Heidi is posing with her son Lorenzo on one picture, Alyssa and her buddy Emma were the two kids I had to keep on the opposite side of me from the water. The kids sang something like this... "Tide goes in, Tide goes out... two times a day. Then there's the sleeper waves, they'll knock you down, roll you over and take you back to sea. Never turn your back on the ocean!" I was singing... "100 kids down by the sea. One slipped off a rock and scraped her knee. 99 kids down by the sea. One slipped off a rock..." You get the picture!
